Understanding Van Lining Carpet

in News

It goes without saying that standard usage for vans is far removed from other vehicles. Whether it’s a work van for a tradesperson, travelling between work sites with all the attendant issues of debris, or else housing tools that may well be greasy or otherwise dirty, or potentially couriering cargo, the interior of a van needs to be hard-wearing and minimum fuss.

As someone with a work’s vehicle, or perhaps someone involved with a rental service, it’s safe to assume that your day-to-day schedule is probably too full to have too much of it used up with vehicle interior maintenance. You may also have a van for travel and leisure purposes, in which case you want the interiors to be as aesthetically pleasing and as fresh as possible. If you need something that maximises effectiveness with only a little effort and regular care, then van lining carpet may be your new best friend.

What is van lining carpet?

In the same way that carpeted car mats are designed to protect your vehicle's interior carpet against wear and tear, debris, spillages, and ultimately decay, van lining carpet is an effective way to protect and prolong your van’s interior and interior, subsequently the overall life of your vehicle.

Whether lining the living area of a camper or touring van, which is commonly done to great effect, or protecting a work van against damage relating to tools, debris, or environmental elements, or even for a hybrid purpose of the two van lining is an excellent option.

How to choose the right van lining carpet for you

This will ultimately be decided by what exactly your van is most commonly used for. Van lining carpet comes with different properties depending on the style, from increasing comfort to muffling sound, to protecting the interior.

The other consideration is budget, while there are professional van carpet fitting services available, they might be somewhat unattainable depending on the size of your van and the quality required. In general terms, and using a VW Transporter as an example, the cost of fitting your own van carpet will run to about £250 - £300 based on the following:

  • Van Carpet – around ten to twelve metres of carpet, at a cost of around £120
  • Adhesive – for a van of that size you’ll need ten to twelve cans of adhesive, at a cost of around £80
  • Tools – useful tools, including a Stanley knife, a heavy-duty stapler, straight edge etc, can be sourced for around £50
  • P.P.E - while we haven’t included it specifically in the cost breakdown, as the expense will be negligible overall, suitable Personal Protective Equipment is always recommended, in this case a face mask and several pairs of latex gloves

What should I look out for when buying van lining carpet?

Alongside budget and use considerations, there are two main distinct types that will effect installation and cost, although these can be further broken down into specialised products.

The first is four-way stretch carpet, which, as the name suggests, is easily stretchable and can be moulded around the van’s interior features, such as side doors and wheel arches.
The other main category is self-adhesive, which comes in both stretchable and non-stretchable forms, and is generally recommended for people looking to install their own carpet, as it removes the need for spray adhesive which can be unpleasant.

Do I need van lining carpet?

As discussed above, the need for van lining carpet will ultimately be determined by the lifestyle and needs of the user, although it is worth reiterating some of the more prominent benefits:

    • Aesthetics – the look and feel of your van may well be one of the most important considerations
    • Thermal insulation – van lining carpet can be effective in protecting the van from extremes of both hot and cold temperature, increasing comfort in the summer, and ultimately saving money in the winter
    • Soundproofing – while it’s worth it due to the increased functionality of the vehicle, it’s fair to suggest that noise in transit is a drawback, one which can be offset by a good lining carpet.
